When you speak with Murugan VV and Balaganesh VM, one thing becomes immediately clear: engineering is more than a profession in their family, it’s a way of thinking. Murugan has spent over two decades at Quest Global, growing from a software engineer into leadership roles spanning delivery, customer engagement, and global collaboration. Today, his son Balaganesh is beginning his own journey here as a software engineer, carrying forward the same curiosity and problem-solving mindset that shaped his father’s career.

But this is more than a story about a father and son working at the same company. It’s about shared values, lifelong learning, and a belief that engineering starts with asking better questions. We sat down with both of them to talk about their journeys, the lessons they’ve learned from each other, and the mindset that continues to connect them across generations.

Tell us about your Quest Global journey.

Murugan:

I joined Quest Global in 2000 as a software engineer and gradually moved across roles in project management, delivery leadership, and customer engagement. Over the years, I also worked closely with global customers, especially in Japan, which taught me the importance of cultural alignment and long-term relationship building.

One of the biggest shifts in my journey was understanding how engineering connects with business. Being involved in pre-sales and customer discussions gave me a new perspective on the effort it takes to win and sustain work. What has remained constant throughout, though, is the opportunity to grow into different roles and keep learning along the way.

Murugan Infront of the Old Monitor

What made you feel Quest Global was a good place for Balaganesh to begin his career?

Murugan:

One thing I’ve consistently seen here is how young engineers are supported. There’s training, of course, but there’s also strong guidance from senior engineers and project leaders. People are given the time to learn, understand systems, and grow step by step. That matters a lot when you’re starting your career.

What are your earliest memories of Quest Global?

Balaganesh:

My first memory actually goes back to childhood. I visited the Quest Global office in Thiruvananthapuram for a junior event and even performed a few magic tricks there.

Later, during college, I returned for internships and got to experience how engineers work together, how teams think through problems, and how supportive the environment is for new joiners. By the time I joined full-time, it already felt familiar.

Did your father influence your path into engineering?

Balaganesh:

Definitely. From a young age, he always encouraged me to stay curious and ask questions. That shaped how I looked at math, technology, and even everyday situations.

Over time, that mindset naturally drew me toward engineering. In college, it also helped me approach projects differently, and I ended up winning the best project award in my department. A big part of that came from learning to think practically and solve problems thoughtfully.

What advice would you give Balaganesh as he starts his career?

Murugan:

My advice is simple: don’t stay in your comfort zone. When opportunities come, take on the challenge.

The early years of your career are the best time to stretch yourself, learn faster, and build confidence through experience.

Is there one lesson from your father that has stayed with you?

Balaganesh:

Yes. He always encouraged me to look at simple, everyday problems and ask whether there’s a better way to solve them.

That habit has stayed with me. Even now, I naturally think about how something can be improved or approached differently.

Murugan With Family

Outside of work, what do you enjoy together?

Murugan & Balaganesh:

We enjoy watching cricket together, and when Balaganesh was younger, we used to play badminton as well.

Engineering has always been a common thread between us too. We’ll often be having dinner and suddenly end up discussing how something works—or how it could work differently. That’s just our natural frequency.

In one line, what does Quest Global mean to you?

Murugan:

A place that recognizes your capabilities and gives you opportunities to grow.

Balaganesh:

An environment where I can learn, contribute, and build my future as an engineer.
